In recent history there are several cases of demolition of civil aircraft. In 1983, Soviet fighter jets shot down Korean Airlines flight 007 off Sakhalin Island because it had been diverted to Soviet territory. In this accident the 269 people died on board, 61 were US citizens. In 1988, a US warship shot down Iran Air Flight 655 and the 290 passengers died on board. In 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight 17 was hit by a missile launcher that researchers said belonged to Russia. The 298 people traveling on that plane died when it was shot down.
