The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a motion to reconsider the death sentence imposed on four men accused of raping and murdering a young woman in 2012. The four appealed to the President of India to obtain pardon, thus taking advantage of their only option to evade dread.

The brutal attack happened when the four violently attacked and raped a 23-year-old psychotherapy student while riding a bus in the capital of India, New Delhi in 2012. The student died of her wounds about two weeks after she was attacked and raped. This incident has provoked an uproar in India, followed by toughening laws and punishment against sex offenders, including death sentences in some cases.

The court decision given today ruled that there is no solid ground for reconsideration of the decision given in court, whereby the four convicts will be charged with rape and murder, the death penalty. "Review all petitions relating to the relevant matter and documents," the court stated, emphasizing that, according to his position, "no argument was received within the parameters specified in this court's decision."

The four men convicted in 2013 lost in all their attempts to appeal the various cases, and last week the court ruled that the four would be hanged on January 22.

The student's family welcomed the decision given today in New Delhi High Court. "I feel good about the decision," said the student's father, adding, "We want to see them hanging. Only then will justice be achieved for our home that is dying in pain."
