(CNN) - The practice for the Australian Open was temporarily suspended on Tuesday due to poor air quality in Melbourne, while smoke from fires in eastern Victoria and New South Wales affects most of Victoria.

The qualifying matches were held at 11 am local time. The organizers of the Australian Open said conditions were improving and "constantly being monitored."

"As always, the health and safety of our players, our staff and our fans is our priority," said the statement, adding that more decisions would be made using data on the site, consultations with the medical team, the Meteorology Office and EPA Victoria scientists.

The match between Maria Sharapova and Laura Siegemund in the Kooyong Classic 2020 in Melbourne had to be canceled after both players were affected by the smoke.

EPA Victoria predicted air quality in Melbourne on Tuesday as "from very bad to dangerous" due to the heavy smoke from forest fires.

The Australian Open is the first tennis Grand Slam of the season and runs from January 20 to February 2.
