María Guadalupe López Esquivel, also known by her alias La Catrina, was shot in the neck last Friday by agents of the Mexican National Guard

A murderer of a 21-year-old Mexican cartel, known for flaunting her curves and dangerous weapons on social media, was shot dead in a shooting with the authorities, according to new reports.

María Guadalupe López Esquivel, also known by her alias La Catrina, was shot in the neck last Friday when the army of Mexico, the National Guard and the state police of Michoacán raided the security house where she was guarded with several armed members of the Jalisco New New Generation Poster (CJNG), according to the English media The Sun and Mexican El Universal .

The shooting happened in La Bocanada, a community located in Tepalcatepec, a municipality located in the limits of the State of Michoacán in adjoining Jalisco. Before the event, the cartel had blocked the road between Apatzingan and Aguililla to prevent access to state security forces.

Esquivel, frightened and disheveled, collapsed behind a wall and was found with her face and clothes covered in blood, according to The Sun. The images taken during the shooting showed that she was struggling to breathe on the floor while a policeman tried to calm her down while waiting for a helicopter flight to the hospital, the site said. “Calm down, girl. The helicopter is coming for you, ”says the officer in the video. "It is coming. Quiet, quiet, you'll be fine. Try to hold on, "he adds.

Esquivel succumbed to his injuries several minutes after the helicopter took off, according to local reports. The hired assassin, who shared her nickname with the female skeletal figure associated with Mexico's Day of the Dead, was considered one of the main figures on the cartel, according to The Sun.

The young woman was the leader of a team of hitmen inside the CJNG that killed more than a dozen state police during an ambush on October 14 in the municipality of Aguililla, Michoacán state, the media reported. At the time of her death, she was responsible for paying other cartel members and coordinating murders, extortion and kidnappings, according to the document.

Rise to power

It is believed that La Catrina joined the CJNG in 2017, after falling in love with another leader, Miguel El M2 Fernández, who was also allegedly arrested during the raid. He ascended rapidly in the ranks of the organization, living a glamorous lifestyle within the cartel.

The CJNG was created in 2007 as an armed arm of the Sinaloa Cartel under the name of Los Mata Zetas. The group became independent in 2010 and became known as of September 2011, being led by Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aka El Mencho. The organization is the main rival of the Sinaloa Cartel for the control of territories in the country.

The CJNG rose to fame between 2013 and 2015 and is considered the "most dangerous and largest" Mexican cartel, according to a report from the Congressional Research Service last December. The organization operates America, Asia and Europe. According to reports, National Guard agents also arrested several cartel colleagues identified as Alejandra, Everardo, Brayan, Juan Carlos, Octavio, Pedro and Alejandro.

Police found ten guns with ammunition and confiscated several vehicles during a subsequent raid, according to reports.
