Twenty serious patients died, of which 17 were elderly people over 65 years of age. No severe complications or deaths related to childhood influenza were recorded during this period.

As regards schools or residential homes, 59 outbreaks were recorded in Hong Kong from 12th to yesterday, of which 16 were in kindergartens or child care centres, 16 were in primary schools, 6 were in residential care homes for the elderly, and 6 were residential care homes for the disabled 4 cases.

Yesterday, the monitoring data released by the Center for Health Protection showed that the overall activity of the local seasonal influenza continued to rise. During the period from January 5 to 11, the percentage of influenza virus positive was 17.46%. The Centre for Health Protection reminds the public that seasonal flu vaccines are safe and effective.
