China reiterated its demand for the United States to respect the one-China principle, noting that it closely monitored the operation of a US warship crossing the Taiwan Strait yesterday.
"The Taiwan issue is the most important and most sensitive issue in Sino-US relations, as it represents the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters published today.
He added, "We call on the United States to adhere to the one-China principle, as well as the three Sino-US joint statements, in addition to dealing wisely with issues related to China to avoid damaging Sino-US relations and affecting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."
The US Navy announced that the Shiloh Ticonderoga missile cruiser had crossed the Taiwan Strait, without giving further details.
Last December, China reaffirmed its consistent position that Taiwan is part of it, stressing that the world will never recognize but one China.
