(CNN Spanish) - In Nicaragua, the two great opposition factions - the Blue and White National Unit and the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy - launched the so-called National Coalition on Friday in Managua. The two groups announced a process of redefining their identity on January 7, which had been interpreted by some analysts as a separation.

The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy, made up of business, student, union and academic leaders, was initially formed by the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference to represent the opposition in national dialogue of May 2018, which sought a way out agreed to the socio-political crisis that began in April of that year. The Blue and White National Unit, formed in October 2018, brings together dozens of civil society organizations and expressions that have participated in the opposition protests in the last 20 months.

“The first step that we are taking for this reconstruction is to unite all without exclusion to strengthen this fight, the second fundamental step is to promote electoral reforms that allow us a better life so that we can access food, health, education, civic and democratically and social security, ”said Lesther Aleman, of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy. "The third step is to call on all Nicaraguans to join this national coalition."

For Félix Maradiaga, of the Blue and White National Unit, “the regime knows that an electoral reform that an electoral process that is not inclusive, that is not recognized by the international community, makes no sense. We have a clear strategy. Next week we will give more details about the process and strategy because we want a reform that is not limited to the electoral political game that we have had so far.

Among the priorities of the National Coalition are promoting electoral reforms that, according to the leaders, seek to achieve free, transparent and participatory processes. The president of the National Assembly, deputy Gustavo Porras, announced on January 9 that within the annual plan of parliament are reforms to the electoral law. Other deputies related to the government warned that they will consult with political parties and not with civil society organizations.
