Just before US President Donald Trump's impeach trial is due to begin Tuesday, the president has decided to strengthen his defense team with three well-known attorneys - renowned Jewish lawyer Alan Dershowitz, former prosecutor Kenneth Starr, who led the impeachment trial against former President Clinton, And Robert Ray later replaced Starr in the special prosecutor's office.

The three are also expected to join a seasoned jurist team headed by White House Attorney Pat Sipolone and Private Lawyer Jay Sklow, who are expected to make statements on behalf of the President on the Senate stage. The defense team will be complemented by former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, one of Trump's veteran personal attorneys Jane Raskin and attorney Eric Hershman.

"That's not what the Constitution writers meant"

The most interesting name for newcomers to the team seems to be that of Dershowitz, a well-known constitutional lawyer and professor at Harvard University who was involved, among other things, in defending the trial of football star Jay Simpson. Over the weekend, Dershowitz gave a host of interviews and told about the role awaiting him on the team. "I will carry part of the opening statement," he explained in a conversation with NPR. "My role is limited to a constitutional expert on impeachment. I will make a broad argument against both impeachment counts. I will not be involved in the discussion of the facts."

Dershowitz, who defines himself as a Democratic liberal who voted Hillary Clinton in the previous election, insists that President Trump did not commit an offense that justifies impeachment. "Even if it is proven that the president has misused his power (one of the two indictments, JH), this is not an offense that warrants impeachment - that's not what the constitutional writers meant," the attorney told MSNBC. In an interview with CNN, he stressed that it was "the same argument I would have gone if Hillary Clinton had won the election and is about to be ousted. I will fight against impeachment, ”he concluded.

Dershowitz's name recently made headlines in Israel in the context of Netanyahu's files. During the hearing, the prime minister's attorney used the Attorney General's report, which, among other things, signed him, stating that it is impossible to determine that sympathetic press coverage constitutes bribery.

Trump's decision to thwart his defense team is not just legal. Not only does Dershowitz and Star add decades of experience to the team, it's two well-known attorneys who starred in high-profile trials. As stated, Dershowitz defended Simpson in the mid-1990s, and since then has participated in several notable trials and has become a recognized legal commentator on many television networks. Kenneth Starr broke into consciousness in the late 1990s as an independent investigator conducting the investigation against then-President Clinton, an investigation that led to the impeachment trial against Clinton, which he eventually won.
