(CNN) - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer use the titles of "their royal highness" after announcing that they will no longer be members of the royal family, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

Prince Henry and Meghan are no longer active members of the royal family and will reimburse the Sovereign Grant funds they recently spent to renew their official residence, Frogmore Cottage: £ 2.4 million (about US $ 3 million) of the money from British taxpayers, the statement says.

"After many months of more recent conversations and discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive path for my grandson and his family," Queen Elizabeth II said in a statement.

"Enrique, Meghan and Archie will always be very dear members of my family," he said. "I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the past two years and support their desire for a more independent life."
