At least two police officers died after a shooting in a tourist neighborhood in Honolulu, Hawaii, this Sunday.
In addition, another policeman was injured and at least four homes were destroyed by a fire related to the incident, in a series of events that were triggered after an eviction attempt, the NBC network reported.
The mayor of Honolulu, Kirk Caldwell, offered his condolences to the relatives of the officers through the social network Twitter and called it an "unprecedented tragedy" for the city and the state.
The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. local time, after police officers responded to an emergency call for a stabbing in Hibiscus Drive, KHNL, a member of NBC, reported.
The Diamond Head neighborhood is at the end of Waikiki Beach, between the Honolulu Zoo and the famous Diamond Head state monument. The area would be full of tourists and locals, especially on a weekend, the Associated Press news agency reported.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officers encountered an armed subject after answering the call and that he fired on them. They died later in a hospital.
During the incident the suspect allegedly set his home on fire and then the flames spread to neighboring houses according to the KHNL station.
The Honolulu Fire Department was fighting the flames.
The suspect would have attacked his landlady first, stabbing him after she presented him with an eviction order, KHNL reported.
No arrests have been made.
The police have closed several nearby streets. The public has been asked to avoid the area.
