The mysterious virus in China has spread to more cities in the country, with the number of people infected tripling and the number of victims rising to three, state authorities said on Monday. Developments have heightened concern over the continuing spread of the disease associated with the SARS family of viruses. Two cases of virus infection have been discovered in Beijing, and one in the southern state of Shenzhen. This is the first time patients in China who have not been located at the center of the outbreak have been found in Wuhan city center.

Municipal health services in Wuhan said 136 new virus-induced pneumonia was discovered in the city over the weekend, adding to the 62 known cases. The third victim of the illness died Saturday. In total, more than 200 people, most of them in China, have been infected with the respiratory virus. That's when hundreds of millions of Chinese nationals are expected to fly in and out of the country during the Chinese New Year holiday, which begins later this week.

Today, South Korea announced the first patient in its territory - a 35-year-old Chinese woman traveling to the country from Wahan. This is the fourth case reported so far outside China, after Japan and Thailand. Everyone was from Wahan or visited her recently.

Chinese President Xi Jinping today called for firm action to contain the eruption and around the world, including in the United States and many Asian countries, has stepped up tests for travelers arriving from Wuhan. The National Health Commission of China announced yesterday it would step up measures to prevent further infections, but admitted it no longer knows what the virus is. Following the outbreak, shares of drug companies and mask makers in China soared.

"Who knows how many people who were in Wuhan don't know they got infected," wrote one of the Wiboo Internet users, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, where the mysterious virus was one of the top issues, with many voicing concern.
