NASA flight engineers Expedition 61 Jessica Meir and Christina Koch have emerged from the hatch of the International Space Station, marking the beginning of a 6.5-hour spacewalk to continue upgrades of the station's energy systems.
This Monday morning spacewalk officially began at 6:35 a.m. when Meir and Koch put on their battery-powered space suits, NASA said in a tweet. The space station is currently on the Pacific coast of Chile.
According to a NASA press release, all female space equipment will finish replacing nickel-hydrogen batteries with lithium-ion batteries that store the energy generated by the station's solar panels in the station's port armor.
