The MAS designates Luis Arce as presidential candidate 4:07

(CNN Spanish) - On Tuesday, in a plenary session and with a simple majority of the votes, the Legislature of Bolivia accepted the resignation of former president Evo Morales and his former vice president Álvaro García Linera.

In the session, both letters of resignation were read and put to the vote.

Morales and García Linera, resigned from the presidency and vice presidency of Bolivia on November 10 in the middle of a social and political conflict that resulted in an escalation of protests in the 9 departments of the country, as a result of the preliminary report of the Organization of American States which indicated the existence of irregularities in the electoral elections of October 20.

From Argentina, where Morales has been asylum since December, the former president said he was still president of Bolivia because the assembly had not formally accepted his resignation. The presidential period
de Morales ended this January 22.

Eva Copa, president of the Senate, and Sergio Choque, president of the Chamber of Deputies, explained on different occasions that the letters would be debated, but priority was given to new laws needed to pacify
the country during the transition government.

After the resignation of Morales, opposition senator Jeanine Áñez assumed the presidency after resignations of members of the Senate and Chambers of Deputies in the line of constitutional succession. The Constitutional Court of Bolivia validated the legality of the interim Government of Áñez.
