The outbreak of a new coronavirus that caused Wuhan pneumonia continued. More than 300 confirmed cases were recorded in more than 10 provinces and cities in the Mainland, and imported cases were also recorded in Asia and the United States. At the same time, Hong Kong is at the peak of winter influenza. When people have symptoms such as fever, they may be worried about Wuhan pneumonia. According to the website of the Center for Health Protection, the symptoms of severe new infectious pathogen respiratory disease (Wuhan pneumonia) are fever, fatigue, dry cough, and the flu is similar to influenza. However, there are obvious differences between at least two points. One is that patients with pneumonia in Wuhan will have difficulty breathing, which is not seen in patients with influenza. The other is that patients with influenza usually recover on their own within 2 to 7 days. treatment.

Wuhan pneumonia and some influenza are caused by coronaviruses. Different coronaviruses can infect many mammals and birds. There are six known coronaviruses, four of which are common pathogens for human colds, and usually do not cause serious illness. The other two were discovered in the last 17 years. One was the coronavirus that caused SARS in 2003, and the other was the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus that caused "new SARS" MERS.

The new coronavirus that causes Wuhan pneumonia is the seventh type of coronavirus discovered. At present, it is still unclear how to move from animals to humans.

Four symptoms of respiratory diseases caused by coronavirus (Centre for Health Protection)

Severe new infectious pathogen respiratory disease (Wuhan pneumonia) : fever, fatigue, dry cough and dyspnea, some patients are seriously ill.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) : The incubation period can be up to about 10 days. Early symptoms are similar to the flu. Patients will initially have a high fever (38 degrees Celsius or above). Others include chills, tremors, headaches, tiredness, or muscle pain. They may also have diarrhea. At the beginning of the onset, some patients have only mild symptoms of respiratory tract infections. After a few days, patients may have symptoms of lower respiratory tract infections such as cough and dyspnea. About 10% of the patients may rapidly deteriorate to respiratory failure and require intensive treatment .

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (New SARS) : Incubation period is 2 to 14 days. Fever, cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty with severe complications such as pneumonia or kidney failure. Some patients also have gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea / vomiting. Patients with weak immunity may have atypical symptoms.

Seasonal influenza : The incubation period is generally about 1 to 4 days. Fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle pain, fatigue and headache; vomiting and diarrhea may also occur. It usually heals on its own within 2 to 7 days. Cough is usually severe and lasts for a long time, but fever and other symptoms usually subside within 5 to 7 days.

It can be seen that patients with four diseases have fever and cough; however, the diseases caused by the three coronaviruses found in SARS since 2003, namely Wuhan pneumonia, SARS SARS, and new SARS MERS, all patients have breathing. Difficult; but the flu will heal on its own within 2 to 7 days, but people with lower immunity or the elderly may experience complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Route of transmission (information from the Centre for Health Protection)

Severe new infectious pathogen respiratory disease (Wuhan pneumonia) : Unidentified. The WHO's risk assessment suggests that infection may be related to animal exposure, and the data clearly show that at least some people can be passed from person to person.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) : It is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets. The virus can also be transmitted indirectly by touching the surface of a contaminated object with both hands and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (NEW SARS) : Not fully identified and may be infected through contact with animals (especially camels), the environment, or diagnosed patients (eg, in hospitals).

Seasonal Influenza : It is mainly transmitted through droplets produced by patients when they cough, sneeze or talk. It can also be transmitted through direct contact with patients' secretions.
