A confrontation arose Wednesday between French President Emmanuel Macron and the security guards to visit Jerusalem's Old City. The conflict was documented during his visit to Santa Ana Church, where according to the Christian tradition Mary's mother is buried - a church belonging to the Order of French monks and considered French territory. The record shows that Macron told security guards who tried to enter the church with him: "Everyone knows the rules. Get out. I don't like what you do. You did a wonderful job in the city. Please, respect the laws."

Macron arrived in Israel along with about 49 delegations from around the world and more than 40 international leaders - including presidents, prime ministers, kings, princes and presidents of parliament, who will attend the International Holocaust Forum hosted by President Reuben Rivlin and Yad Vashem. His confrontation with security forces echoes a visit by French President Jacques Chirac in the Old City in 1996, when he also confronted Israeli security forces who tried to prevent him from meeting with Palestinian civilians who wanted to shake his hand.

Earlier today, Macron met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his residence in Jerusalem. Netanyahu called on the French president to join pressure and sanctions on Iran, following its nuclear and aggressive actions in the region. The two leaders decided on strategic dialogue to continue to strengthen cooperation between the states and to achieve the objectives in relation to regional issues as well. At the end of the meeting, Netanyahu said, "This is a very important change in Israel's foreign policy. It can help us for things that are very important for the security of the state."

Macron later met with Rivlin, and joined their chief of staff, Major General Aviv Kochavi. Macron said at the end of the meeting that "an appeal to the existence of the State of Israel is a form of anti-Semitism. One must keep in mind where antisemitism led in the last century. We will not allow Iran to reach nuclear capability, but everything needs to be done to prevent escalation in the region. "Later, he will also meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen in Ramallah.
