French President Emmanuel Macaron will begin his official visit to Israel on Wednesday with meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President of the State Reuben Rivlin, and Blue and White Chairman Benny Gantz. Later, he will also meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen in Ramallah. Macron, who came at the invitation of the president to participate in the International Holocaust Forum that began tonight, landed at Ben Gurion Airport last night and was welcomed by Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

The focus of Macron's policy meetings will be on the Iranian issue, in the backdrop of the fear of an Iranian nuclear attack and Israel's ongoing campaign to prevent Tehran's establishment in the region. France wants to maintain a dialogue with Iran, despite the nuclear agreement violations, and is pushing to reopen negotiations, which include a reference to the issue of ballistic missiles and Iran's subversive activities and metastasis in the region.

Netanyahu is expected to raise Israeli concern at the opening of a criminal investigation in The Hague and press France to act on Israel's side against the prosecutor's decision in the International Criminal Court. In an interview Netanyahu gave to evangelistic television network TBN yesterday, he said the tribunal was "in the midst of a general attack on democracies" and called for "concrete action, sanctions, against the International Court, its officials, its prosecutors, everyone."

Another topic that is expected to come up in the conversation is the annexation of the Jordan Valley, in the background of the political debate that has been going on in Israel in recent days and Netanyahu's statements that he intends to annex the Valley and all Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. France continues to support the two-state solution and opposes unilateral steps and ahead of its meeting with Abu Mazen Macron may clarify his position on the issue.

According to tradition in Elysee, when a president visits a foreign country during an election campaign, he usually meets with both parties, and Macron will also meet with Gantz later in the day, and this will be their first meeting. The meeting is also expected to attend number 2 in blue and white Yair Lapid, which has held several meetings with Macron at the Elysees Palace in Paris in recent years.
