The Ministry of the Interior announced the arrest of 11 people in the governorates of Damascus and Aleppo for the offense of dealing in a currency other than the Syrian pound, as part of the efforts that it had taken to follow up dealers other than the Syrian pound and prosecute people working in foreign currency exchange on the black market and take the necessary legal measures against them.
The Ministry stated on its Facebook page that people were arrested on 19/1-2020 and on investigation they confessed to practicing the exchange profession without a license and illegally transferring money in order to achieve material profit.
The Ministry clarified that the Criminal Security Department in Damascus arrested eight people for the offense of dealing in foreign transfers illegally and practicing the profession of exchange without a license and seized in their possession foreign currencies and sums of money worth twenty-two million two hundred and seventy-four thousand Syrian pounds.
The Ministry pointed out that the leadership of the Aleppo Governorate Police, in cooperation with the competent authorities, arrested three people for the crime of practicing the exchange profession without a license and seized foreign currency and money in the amount of one million two hundred and twenty seven thousand and forty Syrian pounds.
The Ministry indicated that the confiscated amounts were handed over to the Central Bank of Syria, stressing that they would not compromise in taking legal measures against everyone who deals in a currency other than the national currency, citing effective cooperation by citizens, which contributes to protecting the national economy and has a positive impact on their lives.
