Mice are often labelled as "dirty", making them desperate to kill them. The Year of the Rat is approaching, and the Fisheries and Conservation Department is vindicating wild rats. It turns out that they are neat little animals that are opposite to urban rats. "They have time to comb their hair or their companions. Stomach King, eat 15 to 20 meals a day, green leaves, seeds, dried fruits and other staple foods, and occasionally prey on small insects or invertebrates. There are six species of wild rats in Hong Kong, of which the largest are needle-nosed rats and Indo-Chinese forest rats. The AFCD conducted a four-day ecological survey on Lantau Island and found more than 70 wild rats. . Investigators have pointed out that the wild rat has a pair of sharp incisors, and once the edge of an aluminum box-shaped trap has been bitten through multiple holes, from which the cage rat can be seen.

A pair of sharp and growing incisors can grow up to 14 centimeters a year. The molars must be maintained to a suitable length. The tail with blood vessels is long and young, and even longer than the body. It helps to regulate body temperature and balance. It becomes a mouse. Most obvious characterization.

Big eyes may not have good eyesight. Originally, the eyesight of mice can only be changed by light. There is a little color blindness and large myopia, but the hearing, smell and touch are very sharp. The tentacles become "sensors", so they like to run against the wall. The tentacles are in contact with the wall to grasp the surrounding environment, and they also communicate with their peers through ultrasonic waves and body language that humans cannot hear.

Common residents in the city are brown house rats (commonly known as pit canal mice). Tang Zhibin, a second-level agricultural and forestry inspector of the AFCD, said that because there are too many food resources in the city, it is not surprising that cats can be "raised" into cats under ample clothing. . There are six other species of wild rats in Hong Kong, including rattos, needle-nosed rats, field squirrels, indochina rats, yellow-nosed rats, and yellow-breasted rats. Among them, rattos are the largest and can reach 35 cm in length. More than 60 cm.

The AFCD has conducted many years of small mammal ecological surveys in many country parks and wetlands. Due to the small size and similar appearance of Hong Kong murine species, it is necessary to distinguish species from close distances; therefore, the traditional mouse cages were abandoned, Tang Zhibin explained, "Designed to make the wild rat lose its temperature after rain, or dehydrated by exposure to sunlight, and if the slingshot is closed with a strong impulse, or the hands and feet or tail of the wild rat are pinched," Ecological survey is to let the wild rat catch it alive and send it back live " A folding animal trap with one end open, with sweet potatoes and fried ghost coated with peanut butter as the bait, attracts wild rats with fragrance, and pedals on the inside to ensure that the tail of the mouse fully enters before closing the door.

Indochinese rat bites the trap

Each ecological survey lasts for four days. Investigators will place 6 to 10 labeled animal traps at each survey site and return each morning to check them one by one; if caught, the wild rats will be put in a transparent plastic bag for observation. If it is not identifiable, personnel will collect a small sample of ear tissue from the wild rat for DNA identification, and coat the tail with white oil for identification, and cut the hair at different positions on the back to identify different individuals, collect the data and return it in place.

Tang Zhibin pointed out that the investigation was carried out three times a year. One year, 80 animal traps were placed in country parks on Lantau Island, and more than 70 wild rats were successfully captured. Snakes and maggots were also found in cages. The animal trap was made of aluminum. Tang recalled that a trapped Indochinese rat had very strong incisors, biting the edge of the cage and causing it to be completely sunken.

In natural ecosystems, because wild rats have the habit of storing food, sometimes the collected seeds are buried in soil or dead leaves. Xu Yongzhi of the Fisheries and Conservation Department (Biodiversity) said "may have forgotten (buried seeds) or left a few grains ", Indirectly becoming a seed of communication. If the citizens are lucky enough to see wild rat traces when walking, Xu said that they are mostly only curious when approaching. Don't feel scared or dirty, don't feed, so as not to weaken the foraging ability, and call for the appreciation of small creatures that contribute to nature.

The wild rat is a swimmer. It can swim for 1.5 kilometers continuously in the water, and even step on the water for three days. The water is very strong. The picture shows the Indochinese rat. (Courtesy of AFCD)
