Algerian President Abdel Majid Taboun stressed his rejection of French interference in his country's affairs, calling for "mutual respect" to prevail between the two countries, stressing that "Algeria is not a protectorate of France."
President Taboun said in an interview with local media published by the Algerian News Agency today that Algeria, with its new generation and leadership, does not accept any interference or exercise guardianship over it, adding that “there was a phase of apathy” in relations with France after the Algerians realized that there was interference in Their country's affairs following statements by the French side at the beginning of the Algerian popular movement.
French President Emmanuel Macron, at the beginning of the popular demonstrations in Algeria last year, called for a "transitional period in reasonable time", which the Algerian authorities rejected as "interference in the affairs of the country."
Taboun stressed that "Algeria is not a protectorate of France, it is a free country and possesses its future," adding that "the French are well aware that we, as Algerians, from the simple citizen to the official, are jealous of national sovereignty, especially when attempts to interfere in our internal affairs come from the old colonizer."
