Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the depth of Russian-Palestinian relations, which have roots in history, expressing Moscow's readiness to enhance cooperation with the Palestinians.
"Today, Russian-Palestinian relations have historical and deep roots, and we are ready to enhance this cooperation," Putin was quoted by Russia Today site as saying at the start of his talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem today.
For his part, Abbas praised Russia's support for the Palestinian cause, stressing the importance of the influential and effective Russian role in all issues in the region.
Putin had arrived today in the city of Bethlehem on a visit during which a number of common issues will be discussed within the framework of Russia's support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people in establishing an independent state.
