Last updated: 2020-01-24 17:33The outbreak of a new coronavirus in Wuhan has continued to spread. At least three research teams are currently developing vaccines against the new coronavirus. Gilead Sciences Inc, a U.S. pharmaceutical company, said on January 24 that it is evaluating whether the drug "remdesivir" originally used to treat Ebola can be used to treat new viruses.
Three research teams funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations have begun research and development of vaccines, including the research team of Moderna and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Inovy, USA Inovio Pharma and the University of Queensland. The goal is to have at least one vaccine for clinical trials in June and to be tested and approved for use within one year.

A Gilead spokesman said that the company is actively discussing with the US and Chinese researchers and clinicians the Wuhan pneumonia epidemic and the possibility of using "remdesivir" as a research treatment.
Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Reuters that the institute is working with Gilead to test antiviral drugs to treat new coronaviruses. The institute has tested "remdesivir" on Ebola patients, but with little success. Forsyth said there were signs that the drug would be more effective against the new coronavirus. The drug has successfully produced SARS coronavirus in animal experiments.
