The Prosecutor's Office will request the extradition of Dámaso López Serrano, aka 'Mini Lic', detained in the United States on charges of drug trafficking.

The Prosecutor General of Mexico (FGR) has indicated on Thursday that it already has a warrant for apprehension against Dámaso López, aka El Mini Lic, accused of being the intellectual author of the death of journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas in 2017.

The FGR said through a statement that, through the Office of the Special Prosecutor for Human Rights, it obtained from a federal judge in the state of Sinaloa an arrest warrant against this godson of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán .

The Prosecutor's Office "has immediately initiated all the necessary steps to obtain extradition," since López surrendered to the US authorities in July 2017 and is under criminal prosecution for drug trafficking.

He is the son of Dámaso López Núñez, nicknamed El Licenciado and one of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, who accused the children of El Chapo of being responsible for the death of Valdez.

The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) informed this week that it will begin the intermediate hearing for the validation of the evidence in the case opened by the murder of Valdez, a reporter specialized in drug trafficking murdered on May 15, 2017 at the age of 50 Sinaloa

This hearing had been deferred since December 27, 2018, until federal criminal judge Edgar Rafael Juárez Amador unblocked it on December 26 of last year, bringing the case already "two and a half years of impunity in the family of Javier Valdez ", according to RSF.

The intermediate hearing "is fundamental" because it will discuss the "legality and constitutionality of the evidence of all parties: the prosecution, legal advisors and defenders of the accused."

Investigations into the death of Valdez Cárdenas, killed after receiving 12 shots when leaving the offices of his weekly Doce River, allowed to identify and obtain arrest warrants against Juan Francisco 'P', Heriberto 'P' and Luis Idelfonso 'S' as alleged perpetrators of the murder.

However, "the most important part of this investigation, which was to locate and prove intellectual authorship ," was pending, said the FGR.

The murder of Valdez shocked Mexico , one of the most dangerous countries for the exercise of journalism and that recorded 47 crimes of reporters during the term of President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).

The UN created in 2018 the Breach / Valdez Prize . to remember the death of the journalist and his colleague Miroslava Breach, also killed.

The award is given every May 3, Freedom of the Press Day, and precisely this Tuesday the call for the 2020 edition was opened, which will be the third since it was created.
