(CNN) - Teenager Coco Gauff surprised defending champion Naomi Osaka with a 6-3 and 6-4 victory to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The 15-year-old American needed just 67 minutes to beat the third seed and advance to a game with Zhang Shaui of China or with fellow countrywoman Sofia Kenin.

Gauff was totally dominant during great periods of the game and perhaps even was surprised with the ease of his victory.

"I don't even know," he replied when asked how he had achieved that performance. “From the crowd, I guess. Honestly, how is my life? Oh my God, two years ago I lost in the first round in juniors and now I'm here. It is crazy. ”

“Honestly, I was just telling myself: 'One point at a time and keep fighting because you never know what happens on this court.'

"I love being here, oh my God, honestly, thanks guys from the bottom of my heart, like, oh my God, I'm at the Rod Laver Arena, I can't believe this."

The same day that Serena Williams was surprised in the third round by Wang Qiang, this Friday at the Australian Open maybe now marks a change of guard in women's tennis.

Gauff had already defeated Venus Williams, who also defeated in the first round at Wimbledon, and the experienced Sorana Cîrstea to reach this stage and now adds Osaka to a growing list of renowned tennis players.

Her performance at this year's Australian Open is even more incredible when she considers that she also continues to study, although she says her teachers are giving her a special dispensation.

"Probably tomorrow," he laughed when asked when he would do his homework again. “Because I want to go to sleep tonight.

"My teachers are giving me time considering the circumstances, they are letting me present late."

Last season, Gauff backed his impressive Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, where he became the youngest player since 1991 to reach the fourth round, with an appearance in the third round at the US Open, where he lost to Osaka.

How things have changed.

That day, Gauff won only three games in a unilateral game that ended with Osaka having to comfort the defeated teenager.

In October, she became the youngest winner of the WTA title for 15 years after beating the 2017 French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko, in Linz, Austria.

Hello @CocoGauff - congratulations on your incredible victory tonight. I would love to meet you too. 🚀

Despite his disbelief of being there, Gauff looks very comfortable at the Rod Laver Arena and says his next goal is to finally meet the man whose name the stadium uses, one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

"I spent a couple of times near him in the hallway but I never said 'hello' because I'm too nervous," he said. "If he's watching, let's organize a meeting at some point, I need a photo for Instagram."
