Moscow announced that it reserves the right to respond to the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Bulgaria, noting that Sofia's work is not in line with the "traditional constructive spirit of relations between the two countries."

According to Sputnik, the Russian embassy in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, said on Facebook today: “The Russian ambassador in Bulgaria was invited to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry and a memorandum was submitted regarding the consideration of a diplomat at the embassy as an unwanted person and another memo that considered the commercial representative an unwanted person.” Bulgaria has not submitted any evidence to confirm that activities are inconsistent with their status.

"The Russian side reserves the right to take reactionary measures and considers that the decision of the Bulgarian authorities to publish this information on public websites before the official notification of the embassy is not in line with the traditional constructive spirit of relations between our two countries," the embassy added.

The Bulgarian Public Prosecutor's Office said earlier, "After receiving information from the National Security Agency, he has taken pre-trial measures regarding two Russian diplomats suspected of espionage, but because they enjoy diplomatic immunity status the case has been closed."
