Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders is leading his rivals in the Iowa state primaries, opening the party season for the U.S. presidential election in November. According to a New York Times poll published yesterday (Saturday), the Vermont Jewish senator has 25% support, up 6% from the previous paper in October. That said, while support for former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigej and former Vice President Joe Biden remained stable, with 18% and 17% respectively. Sanders also leads in other polls in the state.

His strengthening comes at the expense of his party to the radical wing of the party, Senator Elizabeth Warren. Its support dropped from 22% in October to 15%. Between the two, a public controversy ensued this month, with Warren blaming Sanders for sexist statements against her. The senator rejects it outright. In all, 13 Democratic candidates remain in the crowded race where it will be decided who will try to keep Republican President Donald Trump out for a second term.

Sanders, like three other Democratic senators running for primaries, was forced to remain in Washington this past week due to a Trump impeachment trial. So, he canceled three planned campaign events in Iowa.

The New York Times poll conducted by Siena included 1,689 registered voters in Iowa. It was held between January 20 and January 23, and sampling error is 4.8%.
