An Australian woman died while participating in a cake-eating contest. According to the BBC network, the 60-year-old woman had seizures during the incident that took place at the Harvey Bay Hotel, Queensland, to mark Australia Day, which took place yesterday. Participants were photographed gobbling up the traditional Lemmington cakes, chocolate-covered sponge cake and coconut chips. She underwent CPR at the scene, but died at the hospital.

Witnesses said she shoved one of the cakes into her mouth as she began to feel uncomfortable. Earlier in the event, the locals seemed to be encouraging the eaters, along with cups of water.

The hotel posted a condolence message for the woman's family and friends, whose name was not posted, on his Facebook page. He thanked the medical services for their "prompt and professional response at the time of this tragic event".

Eating competitions are a popular event during Australia Day, a national holiday marking the arrival of the first Europeans to the continent. At these competitions, prizes are awarded for maximum eating of cakes, pastries, sausages or other foods.
