Trump's identification with Israel could get voters to cross the lines | Israel today

Political-political

Not only in the Middle East - the century plan can also help the president in the presidential race.

Ten years ago, in March 2010, Vice President of Barack Obama's administration, Joe Biden, came to visit Israel. The visit was fraught with tension and controversy, and took place in the shadow of the White House's demand that Israel agree to a further freeze on construction activity in the Occupied Territories. This visit was one of the downturns of Obama's presidency, of which Biden was his senior and loyal representative.

The former vice president is the connecting and mediating thread, which has the power to make sense of Trump's surprising move behind the century plan. Specifically, the foundations and anchors of the new outline are intended to further sharpen and further emphasize the polar divide that exists between these contours, and previous ideas and plans for an Israeli-Palestinian arrangement designed in the Obama and Biden works.

These plans reflected traditional American policy, which was enshrined in the principle of Israeli withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 lines as the basis of the agreement.

Against the background of the deep identification of important voter groups among the Republican base, with Israel and the "special relationship" ethos with it, the presentation of the political and territorial elements of the century plan should clearly reflect these conditions of affection for and support for Israel's security consumers, as well as establish a separation wall. High and clear between the current president's era and his predecessor's legacy.

Thus, this demonstration of the distinct distinction between past policy and the present strategy aims at affecting the values and beliefs of Republican key audiences, further increasing their level of motivation, and contributing to their enthusiastic mobilization of the flag nine months before the decision in the US polls.

Moreover, if the current trend in public opinion polls continues, and if Bernie Sanders is also going to get a big boost on Biden's account and retire to the Democratic top, then Trump's job on that level will be even easier.

For, Sanders' blatant and outspoken attitude toward Israel would put a broad front of all of the Republican movement's leadership led by Trump. That front will be almost completely united with the backing that will give its Israeli ally.

Reason to cross the lines

Indeed, exposing the distant plan to light years from Sanders' worldview, especially in the Palestinian sphere, would provide a special incentive for US President Trump's pro-Israel supporters camp, waist-chasing, and running for re-election in November.

Such a clear presidential signal of friendship and identification with Israel may also lead to the defection of Jewish voters, who are not part of the Democratic Liberal Party's outspoken liberal wing, and to their deep ties to Israel, to cross the lines and change their traditional voting patterns. At the same time, of course, the presentation of the Centennial Plan is now intended to divert - with one glance - the public agenda from the ongoing preoccupation with the impeachment trial, which is underway in the Senate.

However, it would be a mistake to define the event only in American terms. For, even if the timing of the plan was derived from internal constraints and considerations, it should not be overlooked that it was a process of realization that began to take shape as early as Trump's presidential career.

This was when Riyadh convened the Inter-Arab Summit in May 2017, starting with the establishment of the wider regional infrastructure, in which it also hopes to integrate the outline of the Israeli-Palestinian arrangement. The subsequent steps, such as the Bahrain Economic Summit in June 2019, were also intended to form part of the compensation and rehabilitation package that would be offered to the Palestinians as an integral part of the vision of establishing a new and more stable Middle East order.

Even if this vision of a more coherent and cohesive arena, today seems far from fulfilling - it has the status and image of the US President as an enterprising, decisive, resolute leader who no longer hesitates to act outside the box, and is not bound by the ropes and morals of traditional American policy.

There is nothing left but to wait and see what the actual effects of the Century Plan will be, both in the domestic and in the conflict sectors.
