Luis Arce: "It is difficult to have clean elections in Bolivia" 4:41

(CNN Spanish) - The candidate for the presidency of Bolivia for the Movement to Socialism party, Luis Arce, returned to Bolivia on Tuesday and before leaving the airport, received a subpoena from the prosecutor to testify in a corruption case.

Arce arrived at El Alto airport after holding meetings in Argentina with Evo Morales, his campaign manager. He said he returns to Bolivia to start his presidential campaign for the general elections that will be held in May.

The Bolivian State Information Agency (ABI) explained that Arce was denounced by members of the now dissolved Indigenous and Peasant Development Fund (FONDIOC) for the alleged embezzlement of money for projects in the rural area. According to the complaint, the funds would have been disbursed with the authorization of Arce when he was Minister of Finance and Public Works.

The investigation began in 2015. At that time, three Bolivian prosecutors sent a report to the Senate detailing that Arce approved that these resources be diverted. "Of course, the Minister of Economy does not abscessfully consent to any disbursement to private or fiscal accounts or in any way from the Indigenous Fund, because I do not administer it," said Arce in 2015.

Now Arce must appear before the Public Ministry and the Bolivian police on Wednesday, January 29 at 8:45 am local time.

MAS supporters shared the video of Arce receiving the summons from the Public Ministry that they denounce is an attempt to “intimidate” the candidate.

On Monday, the Minister of the Presidency, Yerko Núñez, said there is no political persecution in the accusations against Arce.

"There is no political persecution here, it will surely be seen at the time if someone has not complied with the law there will be time to appear before it, every citizen if he has a complaint has to be accountable," said Nunez.

Upon leaving the airport, the candidate was escorted by a crowd of MAS supporters who waving Whipala flags, used by the ethnic groups of the Andes, and delivering flowers, chanted "Maple President", among other slogans.
