“Access to the Atlantic” for El Salvador and “open skies” agreement, between the agreements signed by Bukele and Giammattei

(CNN Spanish) - Nayib Bukele and Alejandro Giammattei, presidents of El Salvador and Guatemala, respectively, met on Monday in San Salvador and signed a series of cooperation agreements.
Giammattei offered El Salvador the possibility of building a port in its territory to “give access to the Atlantic”.

An agreement was also reached that would facilitate the passage of people and goods between the two countries.

"Within 30 days, immigration requirements will be eliminated, as is the case in European nations," Bukele said at a press conference with the Guatemalan president.

Another of the agreements reached between both presidents is that of “open skies” so that flights between El Salvador and Guatemala are classified as national and thus be able to reduce the price of tickets by attracting low-cost airlines.

Another agreement is that within 90 days customs requirements be eliminated to facilitate the passage of merchandise and exports.

Giammattei, who described the meeting as "historic," is confident that "with the work together we will achieve economic development in the region."

The Salvadoran government reported that in the coming days a team of technicians would travel to Guatemala to meet with their counterpart in order to explore more details for the construction of a port.

For his part, the Secretary General of the Central American Integration System, Vinicio Cerezo applauded the agreements considering that they are key to the development of the region.
