A special government committee has proposed to give Russian President Vladimir Putin a new title to help solidify his position as state leader even after the presidential election in 2024. According to the legislative proposal, the president's official title will be changed from "head of state" to "supreme leader."

A statement from the Kremlin says the president has no particular position on the new legislative proposal. The proposal is part of a series of amendments to the constitution proposed by various lawmakers and government committees following the president's remarks that he wants to change the basic law in the state.

Putin himself proposed some amendments to the constitution himself, amendments that are seen as such that will allow him to hold a position of influence even after the current tenure expires in 2024. Although Putin announced that he did not want to return to the Soviet system whereby he was appointed leader for his entire life.

The Duma, the Russian parliament, gave its approval to the amendment to the constitution put by Putin in a preliminary vote on what he dubbed "reforms." Opposition officials called the vote a "rubber stamp" for measures that would allow Putin to continue to govern indefinitely.

Even officials within the administration have been puzzled by the proposal to change Putin's title. "We have seen some very strange proposals out of those proposed by the various committees, for example, to change the president's title to" Supreme Leader, "the chairman of the Russian Government Press Committee said.

Other proposals sought to change the official reference to the Soviet Union during World War II to the "victorious power" and a proposal to recognize Orthodox Christianity as the country's main religion.
