The caretakers prepared the enclosed space behind glass for the public premiere of the five-month-old twins, removed dangerous obstacles and filled a water channel to prevent the endangered pandas from being wounded.
Their mother, Meng Meng, was closely monitoring her cubs, removing them from high places she considered too dangerous for her offspring.
Visitors to the zoo in the German capital will be given the first opportunity tomorrow to see the young pandas themselves. The twins, whose Chinese names are Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan, are the first pandas born in Germany. They are borrowed from China, as are their parents.
