(CNN Spanish) - In Santiago, a protester died after being hit by a public service bus that kidnapped another protester on Wednesday night.

After the incident, other people participating in the protest lynched the driver and another person who accompanied him. Both remain in serious condition in a hospital where they are detained, as confirmed by General Enrique Bassaletti, head of the East Zone of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago.

Bassaletti said that at least 20 police units were attacked, three supermarkets were looted, public bus burning was recorded and a group of hooded men entered the Chacabuco Governorate building in the Chilean capital where they caused a fire. Several people were arrested and at least 46 police officers were injured.

In a press conference this Thursday, Bassaletti said that this day has been the most violent of 2020 and that he remembers the worst moments experienced in October of last year, when violent clashes broke out between police and people protesting against the Government of President Sebastián Piñera.

Under Secretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, said Thursday in an interview with Channel 13 that "it is essential, after what happened last night, that we call to end the violence and that there is only one voice in that regard."
