The supply of surgical masks in Hong Kong is tight, and the market has been snapped up for days. A member of the Legislative Council of the textile and garment industry, Zhong Guobin, said in an interview with Hong Kong and Taiwan today (31st) that he has researched with the industry and will use new materials developed by the University of Science and Technology to make reversible masks. Each mask can be used 50 to 70 times. Samples will be issued next Monday (3rd), and a production line is expected to be set up in Hong Kong, which will be available in the market after 10 days.

Zhong Guobin said that it is estimated that Hong Kong needs 200 million masks per month to be sufficient, worrying that the supply may not be able to keep up with demand. The industry has considered introducing a reversible mask that can be washed 50 to 70 times, which is equivalent to 1 to 1 box of half masks. He pointed out that the main materials are in the Mainland, but they will be shipped to the Hong Kong production line for manufacturing. He hopes to make a model on Monday and believes that it can be shipped in ten days. He expects that at least tens of thousands of masks can be supplied, and the first batch hopes to give them to disadvantaged groups and the elderly for free.

Zhong Guobin said that the material was research and development funded by the government a few years ago. It was originally used to manufacture sportswear and can protect against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida, but it is unknown whether it can prevent new pneumonia virus.
