The U.S. Senate voted Saturday (Saturday) against summoning new witnesses and gathering new evidence at the impeachment trial of U.S. President Donald Trump, suspected of condoning military aid to Ukraine with the help of his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. The affair, dubbed "Ukraine-Gate," shook American politics, and Trump is the third president in history to face a Senate impeachment trial.

In a majority of 51 against and 49 senators in favor, the vote against the witness summons and the gathering of evidence prevented Democrats' desire to summon more witnesses to an investigation against the president. The decision increases the likelihood of Trump's acquittal in the near future from his indictments - abusing his authority and disrupting congressional work - because two-thirds of a hundred senators are needed to oust an incumbent president.

"America will remember this day when the Senate did not fulfill its obligations, the day it turned its back on the truth and went hand in hand with a fake trial," said Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

One of those witnesses Democrats wanted to call for questioning is John Bolton, the former president's national security adviser. Last Wednesday, the White House informed Bolton that his book, soon to be published, contains "highly classified" materials that he must remove before he is published. According to media reports in the United States, the book claims that President Donald Trump actually linked the military aid freeze to Ukraine to investigate his rival Biden.

Trump denies all the allegations against him, and on Tuesday he strongly condemned Bolton. "He was fired because, honestly, if I had listened to him, we would have been in the Sixth World War," the president wrote on Twitter. "He came out and immediately wrote a wicked and wrong book. Everything is classified as national security. Who would do such a thing?"

National Security Council senior Alan Knight wrote in a letter to Bolton's lawyer that, from the outset of the book's manuscript, it appears to contain "a significant amount of classified information, including at a top-secret level." She warned that the book would not be published without removing this information. A senior White House official said this was not a "threat" to the national security adviser, and that the letter was sent to Bolton even before the excerpts from his New York Times book were published in recent days.

If Bolton's claims that he was ousted last September are true - that $ 391 million in military aid to Kiev was frozen to pressure her to investigate Biden and his son ahead of the November election - this could be an important development. So far, Republicans have claimed that witnesses in the Democratic-led House of Commons impeachment hearing have heard of aid freeze only indirectly. However, Bolton reportedly made it clear that he was instructed directly by the president to do so in order to pressure Ukraine.

The final stage of the impeachment trial against Trump is expected to be Monday and Tuesday, and the final vote on President Trump's vote is scheduled for Wednesday, so he is expected to be credited with the charges attributed to him.
