Australia: Dozens of koalas have been found dead and injured in the eucalyptus plantation

Dozens of koalas were found dead or injured in a forest excavated in the state of Victoria, Australia. The eucalyptus trees were harvested from the plantation in December, with a few more standing trees remaining. Some of the pocket animals starved, others were probably killed by bulldozers. About 80 koalas were transferred from the site for treatment.

Their mass killings are joined by the heavy loss suffered by the koal population following the huge fires in the country, which killed tens of thousands of koalas. Now, the state of conservation of the pocket beast and one of the state's emblems has deteriorated to "vulnerable", according to the Australian Environmental Protection Agency, which announced the opening of an investigation against the responsible company.

"People have probably witnessed the deaths of many koalas dying for tree debris," said Friends of Earth Australia, according to reports of hundreds of koalas dying of starvation after the plantation was cut.

Helen Oakley, a resident of the area, was the first to alert her to a death in a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday. She said she saw dead koalas at the scene. "Mothers were killed with their little babies. Australia should be ashamed of that. We need help."

The Environmental Protection Agency, Australia, said it had sent teams to the site to "save as many of these precious animals as possible." The organization added that the company, which has not yet been identified, may have violated the law extensively, including that against animal cruelty. They also promised to help the authorities in the investigation.

Andrew Prichard of the Department of the Environment said 25 koalas were anesthetized. He told ABC Network that the remaining koalas "will be restored later."
