Dramatic scenes in a shopping street in a London suburb: an attacker injured two people with a stabbing weapon and was shot by the police - who suspects a terrorist background.
London (AP) - In London, a man stabbed two people on Sunday after police said. He was shot by police officers around 3:00 p.m. (CET). Scotland Yard has a terrorist background.
The incident happened on a busy shopping street in the south of the British capital. No further details of the perpetrator and his motive were initially known.
Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the perpetrator had something on his torso that looked like an explosive belt. Corresponding images also circulated on social media.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked the police and emergency services via Twitter. "My thoughts are with the injured and everyone concerned," he said.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted: "Terrorists are trying to divide us and destroy our lifestyle - here in London we will never succeed."
Pictures of the crime scene in social media showed police and ambulance vehicles. Helicopters circled the scene. Scotland Yard called for the area to be avoided.
Most recently, a terrorist in London near the London Bridge had stabbed two people in late November. In June 2017, eight people died in the British capital after terrorists killed three people on London Bridge with a van and then stabbed five others to death at Borough Market. Police shot the three perpetrators. In March of the same year, an attacker drove a car on Westminster Bridge into several pedestrians. Four passersby were killed. The man also stabbed a policeman before he was shot by the police.
