Gilles Le Gendre: "There is no general discomfort at LREM"

2020-02-03T11:04:08.542Z

President of the LREM group at the National Assembly, the Paris deputy Gilles Le Gendre rejects the idea that his training would be weakened after

Exclusion ofCédric Villani, departure from Paula Forteza, pension reform and controversy over the days off for parents in the event of the death of a child ... The president of the LREM group at the National Assembly, Gilles Le Gendre, made the update on tensions and problematic files.

Recently, your group has experienced several departures or exclusions. Is it a hemorrhage?

GILLES THE GENDER . The term hemorrhage does not make sense. It is not a massive flow of departures. In a family of 314 people entering politics from very different backgrounds, it is not abnormal that misunderstandings arise which unfortunately end in breakdowns. Since 2017, there have only been a dozen departures and three exclusions. The latter having intervened for non-compliance with the group's values or its internal rules. The main thing is that we are still 301 members, we have an absolute majority and we are moving forward to succeed in the transformation projects of the country for which we were elected.

Cédric Villani was kicked out of En Marche. What about his situation within the group?

I understand the decision to exclude the executive office of the running Republic. Cédric's statement after his meeting with the President of the Republic surprised or shocked us all. But there is no reason for him to leave our group in the Assembly, unless he himself wishes. I refuse to allow municipal governments to pollute the parliamentary work entrusted to us by the French. In no case will I let him do it!

Why ?

For a very simple reason: our horizons are not the same. In a month and a half the municipal will be finished. It is normal that they arouse emotion and controversy. And I understand that it is the responsibility of our movement to regulate these situations. But we MPs are at work, and we will be at work for two and a half years. The group must be sanctuarized, safe from electoral ups and downs, to work properly.

MP Paula Forteza, supporter of Villani, who has resigned from En Marche and the group, has very harsh words against you. She denounces a party, a group, which are "locked", which "shrink". What do you say to him?

It's not correct. When a colleague leaves us, whatever their motives, most often personal, it is always a failure. But I object to seeing it as a symptom of general malaise. Within our group, we all work very well together.

At this rate, do you fear the creation of a dissident group in the Assembly?

Everything is always possible. In any case, my responsibility is to do everything to avoid it. But today, I don't see the beginnings of it. All the deputies in our group are committed to a program that we have brought before the French. The pension reform is the example of our unity.

"I refuse to let the municipal authorities pollute the parliamentary work entrusted to us by the French," assures Gilles Le Gendre. LP / Delphine Goldsztejn

Exactly, the examination of this reform will be a test for the solidity of your group? We are already talking about 20,000 amendments. Are you going to hold on?

Of course ! Our oppositions practice obstruction: in the cruel absence of ideas on pensions, this is the only strategy they have found to try to exist! The judgment of the French will be merciless. To this worst-case policy, we will respond with our sense of responsibility. There is no subject in this reform, except for nuances, on which our group is not fully aligned.

On the pivotal age, there were all the same differences…

Yes, but this subject is behind us. Our group pushed a lot for a compromise to be found with the social partners favorable to the reform on the financing conference. We naturally hope that this conference will succeed. We are confident that this will be the case.

How is the morale of parliamentarians? Some are verbally assaulted in their constituencies, others have seen their tenure degraded…

Our mission has been demanding from the start. It was all the more difficult at the beginning, as we were not prepared to exercise it. Since then, we have learned the trade. It is true that the political and social situation is complicated. Our country is crossed by fractures, mistrust vis-à-vis the political class, sometimes even unacceptable violence. It is difficult to reform France and convince the French. But I am convinced that the only way to relieve these tensions is precisely to provide the right answers to situations that the French can no longer bear. This is what we will continue to do until the end of our mandate.

The LREM deputies rejected a bill aiming to increase the days of parental leave from 5 to 12 in the event of the death of a child. This weekend, the government has backtracked but the question remains: are the LREM deputies heartless?

In no case do LREM deputies lack heart. I reject this criticism, absolutely! It's so easy to have a controversy in circumstances like these. The emotion created by this vote shows that the provisions adopted in consultation with the government, if they represent real progress, are still insufficient. They must therefore be corrected. LREM MEPs are ready to vote again on measures which, beyond the question of leave, would also ensure more comprehensive support for parents who are facing one of the most serious tragedies that a human being can experience.

Let's be clear: will it be 12 days off?

Twelve days, maybe more! We must rework the subject more carefully and repair our error of appreciation. By remaining guided by a single objective, that recalled by the President of the Republic: humanity.
