(CNN Spanish) - Authorities of the Ministry of Public Health of Honduras confirmed on Monday that, in the first four weeks of this year, there are already five people killed by severe dengue.

According to Dr. Gustavo Urbina, in charge of the Department of Arbovirosis of the Ministry of Health at the national level, the five deaths were confirmed through laboratory tests.

The official said that, as of 2020, there are already 4,268 cases of dengue. Of these, 3,868 are cases of non-severe dengue and 400 cases are of severe dengue.

Urbina said that this year there are 2,942 more cases of non-serious dengue than those recorded on the same date last year and 58 more cases of severe dengue.

The official called on the Honduran population to remain on alert and said they continue with the elimination work of the aedes aegypti mosquito breeding grounds, a disease transmitter.

In 2019, the Ministry of Health reported the death of 180 people due to severe dengue.
