The Rottenbucher Straße in Graefelfing is supposed to turn green again into a continuous avenue. Judging by the dedication with which the community has chosen and planted the 50 new trees, success is virtually inevitable.

Graefelfing - With Roland Strecker, who is responsible for civil engineering in the town hall of Graefelfingen, the community has a proven tree specialist. Strecker is an engineer for landscaping and also worked as an arborist during his studies. For Rottenbucher Strasse, he selected various tree species that are resistant to urban climates. They have to endure heat stress, road salt and soil compaction - which the trees on the section between Wandlhamerstrasse and Flurstrasse did not manage before the renovation and went in rows.

Between Wandlhamerstrasse and Merovinger Strasse, Strecker planted rubies as they stand and thrive in the northern part of Rottenbucher Strasse. A mixed zone begins south of Merowinger Straße, where less space is available due to the transverse parkers: young linden trees now stand between Wessobrunnerstraße and Merowingerstraße, where there is sufficient space thanks to longitudinal parkers, and whitebeams in the tree trench two to three meters wide where it goes through the vertical parker is closer. These trees are more compact and don't grow as big as linden trees.

At the bus stop Sudetenstraße (west side) there is now a Japanese cord tree in a tree disc. "This is a location with a lot of sun, which is also reflected by the pavement, and the cord tree is particularly heat-resistant," explains Roland Strecker.

Strecker allowed himself a "dentrological gag" in the area of the new zebra crossing at the confluence of Wessobrunner Strasse: there are now four blood beeches - the Gräfelfings coat of arms - and that in Rottenbucher Strasse. Because the blood beeches actually need more water than the street space offers, they will be poured drop by drop in summer from special vessels that are attached to the trunk. Strecker: "Otherwise, the soil around the roots dries out so much that when it rains, everything drains away instead of seeping in." This change in tree type, together with new cold white lights, is also intended to indicate the crosswalk. In the area between Wessobrunnerstrasse and Flurstrasse, field maple follows, based on the sycamore maple in front of Sickinger / Vinzenzmurr.

For all new plantings, Strekcker had the construction yard excavate pits 1.5 meters deep, which were filled with a special tree substrate that serves as a water and nutrient store. In the barren gravel level, this is a basic requirement so that Roland Strecker's motto comes into play: "Give trees a chance."
