The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow afternoon on the latest events in north-western Syria, where fighting between Turkish and Syrian soldiers took place this week.

The meeting, which will be public, has been requested by France, the United States and the United Kingdom. The UN envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is expected to make a presentation on the situation in the Idleb region.
The clashes between Turkey and the Syrian regime that left more than 20 dead Monday, risk further destabilizing the province of Idleb, the last stronghold held by jihadists and rebels where the humanitarian situation is critical.

Yesterday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for a " cessation of hostilities " between Turks and Syrians, citing " an extremely worrying change in the nature of the conflict ". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued an ultimatum to Bashar al-Assad's regime today to push back his troops, supported by Russian aviation, in northwestern Syria.
