“I kept it a secret because I was afraid of the pain of being accused of supporting the community for fashion, for something that caused me a lot of confusion, fear and agitation when I was a child,” said the actress.

Jamil said she was afraid to make her sexual orientation known as an actress in South Asia in her 30s, and that Twitter was not the place where she wanted to.

This week, Jamil has been addressing the violent reaction surrounding his participation in “Legendary,” an upcoming ballroom competition program at HBO Max.

The ballroom culture emerged in New York when black and Latino gay men and trans women created mutual support systems called houses. In the houses dances were made, and they are safe spaces for competitions that celebrate skills that include fashion and dance.

The actress of "Transparent" and "Pose" Trace Lysette criticized the decision to hire someone who was not part of the culture.

“I was interviewed for this performance. As the mother of a house for almost a decade, it is a kind of explosion when people with no connection to our culture get the job. This is not a criticism against Jameela, I love everything it represents. In any case, I question those who make the decisions, ”Lysette said on his Twitter.

"I know that just because I was 'queer' I don't qualify to be in a ballroom," Jamil continued in the post. "But I have the privilege and power and a large number of followers to bring them to this show, (like the absolutely iconic Megan Thee Stallion) and its beautiful contestants and ballroom hosts."
