Disappearance of writer and academician Yves Pouliquen

A renowned specialist in ophthalmological surgery, the academician was very involved in putting the dictionary of the French Academy online. He died Wednesday at the age of 88.


“The Perpetual Secretary and the members of the French Academy are saddened to announce the disappearance of their colleague Mr. Yves Pouliquen, who died on February 5 in Paris. He was 88 years old ”. It was through this press release that the French Academy announced the disappearance of the writer and ophthalmologist. He was elected on November 29, 2001 to the chair of Louis Leprince-Ringuet (35th chair).

A surgeon by training, Yves Pouliquen was very involved in putting the famous dictionary of the French Academy online. Member of the Dictionary Commission, which has twelve members, Yves Pouliquen had been responsible for the digital publishing project of the work. Thanks to him, the nine editions of the dictionary are now available online, free of charge.

Born on February 17, 1931 in Mortain (in the Manche), Yves Pouliquen was the author of twenty books on his specialty, ophthalmology, published by Odile Jacob. From a novelist ( Les Yeux de autre , 1995), he had gone on to the publication of essays with An oculist in the age of light: Jacques Daviel (Odile Jacob, 1999). In The New Era of Surgery , the author, who then entered the French Academy, returned to his vocation, his masters, and painted a picture of the conquests of surgery in his field. His latest work, Les Immortels et la Révolution, was published in October 2019. In his November 28 edition of the literary Figaro , one could read by Etienne de Montety: “He shows by this work that he also has some provisions for historical research. He immersed himself in innumerable archives and consulted the memories of the precious Morellet, and those of Marmontel, another contemporary of the events. The result is a remarkable study in which he dissects the hearts of his fellows. One maneuver intelligently to guard the Company from peril, another man composes with the powerful, another man is carefully forgotten. It takes everything to build an Academy. ”

“It is with great emotion and sadness that I learn of the death of Yves Pouliquen, of the French Academy, a great surgeon, master of a whole generation of ophthalmologists, writer of great talent, author of numerous books. which I had the honor and the pleasure of publishing, ” reacted for its part its historic editor, Odile Jacob, on its Twitter account.
