A NASA satellite has discovered a phenomenon on the "red planet" Mars that we have known for a long time on Earth - and is causing considerable problems. So far, it has been difficult to research this phenomenon. But closer observation of these "sporadic e-layers" on Mars by NASA's MAVEN satellite gives hope for further research and, in the best case, a problem solving on Earth.
Because the phenomenon occurs almost constantly on Mars, while it only occurs sporadically on Earth and only around 100 kilometers above Earth - a height at which the air is too thick for satellites. On Mars, on the other hand, NASA's MAVEN satellite can get closer to the layers to examine them. The researchers are now hoping that the data collected from activities on Mars will provide insights into problems on Earth, such as the interference with radio waves.
Discoveries on Mars: NASA already made these observations on the red planet
The discovery of "sporadic e-layers" on Mars is not the first time that NASA has discovered unusual events on Mars. Most recently, a scientist involved in a Mars mission in 1976 reported life on the red planet - and "ghostly lights". But not all research results, which initially promise a lot, then turn out to be a great discovery: In the search for extraterrestrial life, NASA made an extraordinary measurement on Mars last year. But sobering followed shortly thereafter.
