(CNN) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Caracas, Venezuela, on Friday, the last stage of his tour of Latin American countries, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov is expected to meet with the beleaguered President Nicolás Maduro and hold talks with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, according to the Russian state news agency TASS. The Russian official arrived in Venezuela after visiting Cuba and Mexico.

Speaking at a press conference after his visit to Mexico, Lavrov said that Russia and Mexico have "similar positions" in the normalization of the situation in Venezuela and criticized what he called "provocations" by the United States to be used as " pretext for a "military intervention", as cited by the state news agency TASS.

"All the problems that exist in this country and that have accumulated" must be resolved "exclusively through dialogue between the government and the opposition," he said.

Responding to a question about whether Russia can coordinate the conditions for Maduro's possible exit, Lavrov said Russia does not consider "such initiatives as useful or productive."

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump told Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, during a meeting at the White House, that the United States will increase pressure on Maduro. The meeting came after Guaidó's surprise appearance on Tuesday as a guest during the Trump Union state speech.

Guaidó is recognized as interim president of Venezuela by the United States and more than 50 countries.
