INFOGRAPHIES - For the second consecutive year, the Federation of bicycle users has unveiled its barometer. If Grenoble is elected "the first cycling city of France", Paris progresses, and Marseille is not in the top 10.

In the middle of the municipal campaign, and while successive strikes have enabled many city dwellers to discover the joys of cycling, the Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB) has released its second "barometer of cycling cities" . Analysis of the results shows that infrastructure for cyclists has improved over the past two years in many metropolitan areas, including Paris, even if it remains "insufficient" .

On the podium of the cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants most favorable to cyclists are Strasbourg (with a score of 4.02 points out of 6), Nantes (3.55 points) and Rennes (3.46 points). Paris comes in 4th position but the city has experienced a “dynamic” evolution, according to the barometer: the practice of cycling jumped during the strike against the pension reform with 2.6 times more passages of cyclists recorded than in normal times by the counting terminals. According to the Federation, Marseille comes last in cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, with 1.96 points, just after Nice (2.37 points).

In cities of 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants, Grenoble leads the way (4.12 points) ahead of Angers (3.38 points) and Caen (3.25 points). The podium of cities with 50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants is occupied by La Rochelle (4.04 points), Chambéry (3.76 points) and Versailles (3.64 points).

But cycling is not the prerogative of French cities. One of the surprises of the survey is that the only city to obtain the best score - an A for 80 reviews - is the small town of less than 2,000 inhabitants of Saint-Lunaire, in Ille-et-Vilaine. The mayor decided in particular that on the four beaches of the town, none would be accessible by car.

3% of bicycle trips in France

According to the Federation, 40% of cyclists questioned estimated that traffic conditions in their city had changed positively between 2017 and 2019. Almost 16% of respondents, conversely, believe that these conditions have deteriorated . The number of satisfied cyclists is higher in cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, where 56% of those questioned expressed a positive opinion on the improvement of infrastructures dedicated to cycling. In municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants, this number drops to 27%.

This barometer, made on the basis of 185,000 contributions and covering 768 municipalities, shows "some good progress, but a majority of cities in France still have efforts to make," said the Federation of bicycle users in a statement.

"The bicycle is an issue far beyond the hearts of metropolises" , underlines the Federation of bicycle users, which calls for "converting the test of the national bicycle plan to the local level" , during the elections municipal elections in March. Today, the little queen represents only 3% of daily trips at the national level. And if the government intends to triple this figure by 2024, the year of the Paris Olympic Games, the infrastructure will have to be there. Especially since, according to the association, about a third of journeys in France are between 2 and 7 km, an "ideal distance for cycling" , which would therefore have a major role to play in rural or peri-urban areas.
