How do I say Quidditch in Yiddish? Almost 23 years after the first book in the Harry Potter book series, which has become a real history, and after the books appeared in more than 80 languages around the globe, the book will soon be published in Yiddish. And the story behind the book's publishing is almost as amazing as the cities of Peter himself.
The initiative began to develop in October 2018, when Neil Blair, JK Rowling's agent, received a strange face from an American Yiddish teacher by the name of Aaron Schechter and DeWonet. "I grew up with Yiddish as a native language and always wanted to experience the magical world of witchcraft and sorcery in my favorite language," the man told him. "Modern and fascinating children's literature was almost non-existent, and instead my brother and I, together with our Yiddish-speaking peers, had to settle for old-fashioned works that often existed before World War II."
"The idea for the project came up on Saturday at noon," the translator added. "I sat down with my wife and reread books from the series together. She turned to me and said 'How are we going to raise our children in a language that doesn't have Harry Potter?'" From there, the project began to roll.
Blair was intrigued and decided to join the mission but soon the venture took a strange turn. It turns out that the rights to translate the Yiddish book have already been granted to a Swedish publisher. why? Since 1999, Yiddish has become an official minority language in Sweden, and therefore, by law, every book that receives government funding must also be translated into Yiddish. The company that publishes the new book deals with the translation of various books into Yiddish, including Hobbit and others.

Surprisingly, there was already a translator working on a Harry Potter version of Yiddish, but following Blair's appeal, it was decided to send both translations to the Jewish language experts. Finally, it was decided unanimously to choose a translation of Visionet.
In order to translate the book, which obviously does not have a single word in Yiddish, you had to reinvent words, because Rowling invented terms himself. For example, it was necessary to find solutions to translate the name Hermione Granger, Severus Snape and more. He also changed concepts such as Quidditch based on the well-known concept of "if God also wants a broom shooter" for the term - "shame in the broom" (broom shooter).

At the end of a year of work, Harry Potter and the Wise Stone is available for pre-order now, but is limited to 1,000 copies in the first edition. Viswonet is already working on the next book in the series. The Swedish publisher, for his part, notes that he hopes the book will become especially popular. "I hope the book will make people consider learning Yiddish," Nikolay Olianski told the American Tablet Magazine website. so".
