The former president of Bolivia Evo Morales left Argentina in the first minutes of this Monday and traveled to Cuba. This was confirmed by Alberto Fernández, who also revealed that it was for treatment.
"Evo is a political refugee and as such he has a series of rights and can exercise them. I have been told that he is in Cuba, he is dealing with something. He spoke days ago with me, but it was a comment when he passed. Nothing prevents him from he as a political refugee go to Cuba, "Fernandez said during an extensive interview he gave on Continental radio.
In Cuba, coincidentally, is Cristina Kirchner, the current Argentine vice president, with whom Morales has a very close relationship since the time when they were both leaders of their respective countries.
After his resignation from the Presidency of Bolivia and a period in Mexico, Evo Morales had arrived in Argentina on December 12, just two days after the assumption of Alberto Fernández. At that time, he entered the country with a request for political asylum, because it does not require justification, but immediately gave his arguments to remain in the country as a refugee.
During his stay in the country, and despite the request of the Argentine government, he had an intense political activity, facing the presidential elections that will be held in May in his country. He even made the official presentation of the MAS candidates for those elections.
In addition, the figure of Evo Morales in Argentina raised doubts in some international sectors, particularly in the United States, at a time when Argentina faces a tough negotiation for the restructuring of the external debt. Therefore, the departure of the former president can generate some relief on that political front.
Morales, "friend" of the Cuban government, was surgically operated in that country at the beginning of March 2017, when a nodule of the left vocal cord was removed. And since then, he travels every three months to the island to continue his medical treatment.
