Bolivian ex-president Evo Morales, who has been in exile in Argentina since December, left discreetly on Monday February 10 for Cuba for medical reasons, announced the Argentinian press.

The center-left Argentine head of state Alberto Fernandez, who granted him refugee status, explained that he had been informed of this displacement. “ It seems to me that he is undergoing (medical) treatment and that he had to travel. He called me a few days ago. As a refugee, you can't stop them from going to Cuba. He has rights which he can enjoy, "he said on Monday at Radio Continental.
Evo Morales, 60, had declared himself the winner of the October 20 poll, but the opposition had cried out for fraud. After several weeks of demonstrations and his release by the army, the president announced his resignation on November 10, before fleeing to Mexico, then finding refuge in Argentina.

He had already been to Cuba for a few days between his departure from Bolivia and his arrival in Argentina. Since then, he has been prosecuted in his country for “ sedition and terrorism ”. The Bolivian authorities have repeatedly stated that he would be arrested if he returned to Bolivia.
The elections of May 3 aim to elect the president, the vice-president as well as 36 senators and 120 deputies. In the event of a second round, the ballot will take place on June 14. The former Bolivian president formalized on February 5 his candidacy for the Senate at the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), failing to be able to run for the fourth time the presidency of his country.
