Victor Dubuisson: "sixth at Saudi International, it's a big miss"

2020-02-10T16:10:12.648Z

Asked by our colleagues from Nice-Matin, the former world No. 15 is not satisfied with his recent top 10 in Saudi Arabia. Yet his best result since November 2017.

Present last weekend at the 23rd Pro-Am of the Old Course Cannes Golf Links, Victor Dubuisson agreed for our colleagues from Nice-Matin to look back on his rather encouraging start to the season on the European Tour, with a highlight nice sixth place obtained on February 2 at Saudi International. Five lengths behind the winner, the North Irishman Graeme McDowell. A performance that the winner of the 2014 Ryder Cup in Gleneagles (Scotland), however, ranks in the… “missed” section!

Two stupid errors from a distance

"For me, it's a big failure," he confirms. I had the win in my hands and I finished sixth by making two stupid distance errors on the last day. I completely missed this end of the tournament. For me, it's a big miss. (..) Oddly, I did not think about winning. Because the only way to win is to be completely detached from it all. I wanted to do my best. It didn't because of two silly errors from a distance. But I hope to keep typing like this. I also hope that I will finally take pleasure in setting foot on the course and stop living in the uncertainty of my shots, in terms of distances. Stop fighting a little bit to make up for my mistakes. This is what I experienced last year and it is a golf that pumps a lot of energy. I did not take pleasure in playing under these conditions. "

The French, double winner on the European Tour (at the Turkish Airlines Open 2013 and 2015), also came back on his distance problems linked to clubs, badly assembled for ... three years! "With my coach (Benoit Ducoulombier), I realized that my clubs had been badly assembled for 3 years, he adds. The settings were not the right ones. With my injury and my year-long hiatus in 2018, I hadn't really paid attention to that. When I resumed last season, I told myself that I had naturally lost in distance. But in fact, it was mainly a hardware problem. I took over an old series of clubs from 4 years ago. And there I finally hit some real golf shots. In the wind, with a correct putting, I found my game. That of my good years. "

"I focus on myself"

Resting for another two weeks, Victor Dubuisson has also unveiled the rest of his program. “I'm going to play Oman (February 27-March 1), Qatar (March 5-8) and Kenya (March 12-15), because there will be a big cut for a month afterwards. The calendar is not very well done once again. "Finally asked about the excellent results of French golfers in recent months on the European Tour (Victor Perez, Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Benjamin Hébert and Romain Langasque), he admits that he does not take it too much into account!" Frankly, I do laughs, he concludes. It doesn't motivate me more or less. I focus on myself. I play for myself. Take the example of Victor Perez. He's someone I really appreciate, I get along very well with him and I was very happy to see him win the Dunhill. People don't realize. I still made top 10 in Major, I played and won the Ryder Cup. I finished twice in the top 5 of the Race. What they are experiencing, I have already experienced. "
