(CNN Spanish) - The Venezuelan Attorney General announced the arrest of a 56-year-old man in Maracay, suspected of having locked a woman for 31 years in an apartment in that city in the north-central part of the country.

The defendant faces charges of "psychological violence, threat, sexual violence and sexual slavery," the Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.

The woman is 49 years old. If the crime was proven, his kidnapping would have occurred in 1988 when he was 18 years old.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the woman went on January 24 to report the fact to the 25th Prosecutor of the Aragua state accompanied by officials of the National Women's Institute. The authorities do not explain how he would have fled.

"After verifying the fact and after several expertise carried out by officials of the Corps of Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations, the Scientific Technical Unit and the Victim Attention Unit of the Public Ministry, the aggressor was arrested," said the Ministry Public in a statement.

The aforementioned was already submitted to the 2nd Control Court of Aragua, which ordered the suspect to remain in a regional police detention center in Maracay.
